Derrick Thompson hit with 5 more murder charges in June 2023 car crash

Hennepin County attorney Mary Moriarty put out a press release today announcing five additional murder charges against Derrick Thompson, aged 28. He remains in custody on $1 million bond.

You will recall that Thompson is accused of killing five young women, ages 17 to 20, in a horrific car crash with his rented Cadillac Escalade back in June 2023 in south Minneapolis.

Moriarty announces:

Thompson is now charged with five counts of third-degree murder, on top of the original 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide.

Previously:

The original charges against Thompson, which remain in place, include five counts each of criminal vehicular homicide (leaving the scene) and criminal vehicular homicide (operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner).

The state’s judicial website has yet to be updated with the additional counts. The state trial for Thompson is scheduled to begin on December 2. Thompson is due back in state court on November 4.

But before those events, Thompson is scheduled to stand trial in Federal court on gun and drug charges arising from the same June 2023 incident. The Federal trial has been scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 7 at the federal courthouse in downtown St. Paul. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for October 3, although those dates may change.
