MN educators: Make your choice about union membership today!

Today is the last day for Minnesota educators to evaluate their relationship with the teachers’ union and decide if union membership is right for them.

If you are a Minnesota teacher who has decided union membership is not the best decision for you, make sure you create a customized resignation letter and get it postmarked today. Otherwise, you will be locked into membership and dues payments for another year.

The steps to mail your letter are simple and will automatically populate after you create your letter here.

Remember, it’s your choice whether you financially support the union. It’s not the union’s choice. It’s not your employer’s choice. And it’s not your colleagues’ choice. You are also not obligated to meet with anyone about your decision. Thousands of educators across the state have said “no thanks” to union membership for a variety of reasons. Some don’t appreciate the union sending their money to politicians and political organizations they disagree with. Others hope their resignation will serve as a wake-up call to the union to better serve its members and their professional needs.

No matter your reason, you are not alone. And you can always rejoin membership if you decide that’s what’s best for you.

“Who is going to represent me?”

The union fought for and won the right to exclusive representation, and because of this, must represent both members and nonmembers in good faith. This is why name-calling, such as “free loaders,” is so disingenuous. If the union wanted to only represent dues-paying members, it could lobby for this change.

Teachers who are non-members don’t receive the union’s liability insurance, but there are individual liability insurance plans available outside of union membership. Visit here to learn about two national education associations that provide liability coverage and other job protection benefits for a fraction of the cost of dues and without the politics.
