Derrick Thompson update: two trials scheduled for this fall
I am frequently asked to update the status of Derrick John Thompson, the son of the former state representative John Derrick Thompson (DFL-St. Paul).
The younger Thompson stands accused of killing five young women in a horrific car crash more than a year ago in Minneapolis. He faces separate court cases arising from the June 2023 incident.
Thompson continues to be held in federal custody at the Sherburne County Jail. He was transferred to federal custody back in December.
On Monday, a federal judge set the trial date for Thompson’s drug and gun charges. His Federal trial will begin Monday, October 7 at 9 am at the federal courthouse in St. Paul.
His state trial on murder charges is set to begin December 2 in Minneapolis. Thompson is scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing in state court on August 27 in Minneapolis.
KARE-11 TV has requested permission to televise the state trial. Cameras are not permitted in Federal courtrooms.
